As Perfume kick off their debut European tour in Cologne, Germany tonight, the J-pop trio’s cool quotient has had an unexpected boost, courtesy of founder member Yuka ‘Kashiyuka’ Kashino. In a post on Perfume fan blog Aerodynamik, the 24-year-old lists off some of her current favourite albums – and it’s the kind of selection you’d expect from an avid Pitchfork reader. Forget J-pop: apparently Kashiyuka would rather be jamming to the latest releases from Vampire Weekend, Gold Panda, Bjork and Baths. Her sole Japanese pick, in fact, is 20-year-old producer Madegg – an electronica wunderkind who’s got more in common with Four Tet and Flying Lotus than anything in Yasutaka Nakata’s oeuvre.
Here’s the list in full:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mosquito
Port St Willow, Holiday
Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City
Gold Panda, Half of Where You Live
UPDATE: It seems this isn’t a one-off, either: as reader @iSeeDeadTweeps points out, Kashiyuka happily reeled off a whole heap of British acts in a recent interview for the Embassy of Japan in the UK website, ranging from Muse and Radiohead to Squarepusher, The xx, James Blake and Four Tet.
And while we’re on the subject of Perfume: Japanese fans eager to keep track of the group’s European exploits can watch their show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire live at branches of Toho Cinemas around the country. Just be warned that it’ll involve staying up late: time differences being what they are, the screenings kick off at 4am on Saturday, July 6, though the gig will also be re-broadcast at the more civilised time of 7pm. Details (in Japanese only) available here.
