Never really caught the gist of rakugo, the traditional form of Japanese comedy loved especially by older folks all across this fair country? Well, now’s your chance to get a pretty effective intro: Canadian-born rakugo storyteller Katsura Sunshine will be dropping lines at Roppongi Hills tomorrow (Wednesday) from 7pm, performing in both English and Japanese, with subtitles also provided for both appearances.
Having trained under renowned master Katsura Bunshi VI, Sunshine is one of the very few foreign-born rakugo performers in Japan, and has entertained audiences from the US to Sri Lanka on his many tours. Tomorrow’s event, organised by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, marks the start of a worldwide series of shows that will take him from Canada to the UK and from South Africa to Slovenia.
If you’re interested, check out the official website and buy a ticket in advance (¥6,000), or come to the Roppongi Hills Club (Mori Building, 51F) around 6:30pm and pay ¥7,000 at the door. The ticket price includes a buffet and access to the open bar after the show.
Finally, just in case you’re feeling a bit down at work or something – here’s a quick Sunshine highlight reel.
